It’s the first week of the NFL playoffs and Sports Illustrated does a cover story on what else? The cover of Sports Illustrated. This look at the proverbial SI cover jinx, despite sounding goofy, is a thorough piece of historical research, statistical analysis and psychological theory. It also makes a fan of the magazine realize once again why. The story is not on the SI site, but the link above provides some great background into the jinx and a cover timeline. It’s sort of snopes.com on steroids for at least this one urban myth (or fact?). Titans fans would certainly agree it’s a fact: the team has tanked since being declared the best in the NFL on SI’s cover exactly one year ago, right before that unfortunate playoff game against the Ravens.
