Self preservation: It is unusual (if not unprecedented) when magazine editors encourage each other to self-censor themselves. But that has happened by an association of editors of science journals. “Any work that might be used by terrorists for malevolent purposes should not be published,” says the statement by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The group believes if the editors don’t censor themselves, then the government will begin requiring them to submit research papers to security agencies for review. While some may view this as a first amendment issue, common sense dictates that the publication of information that would enable our enemies to carry out mass murders is not “protected speech.” In this instance, ones freedom to live trumps another’s freedom to publish.
