Night shift publishing: The Fresno Neighbors City View Showcase (which reveals how deep google news must be indexing now) has a story which has this as its final sentence, “In six months, Keeney and Smith have learned a a great deal about running a magazine.” There is no way I could not point to this story about two men and their magazine dreams.
Quote:
After his day job as an auto mechanic is over, the 33-year-old Smith can spend as many as 30 hours a week working on the magazine. Tonight he must load his pickup with the new issue and distribute them to more than 100 local shops and businesses. Some of the places — bars, strip clubs — keep long hours. That can make for a long night.
Don’t toss us away: As a rule, I don’t blog the demise of magazines (and tansactional news), but then, most magazines that close are not 30-years old and published in Nashville. The Tennessean reports today that Country Music Magazine has ceased publication and the August issue will be its last.
Seal of Approval: In my opinion, Meredith has been the most creative and aggressive leader in unleashing the licensing value of a magazine brand for as long as I can recall. Recently, they announced one more way they are going to leverage the Better Homes & Garden brand.
The world according to them: The Tempo staff of the Chicago Tribune have come up with their own Top 50 magazines (and a list of ones they think have “gone bad.”) What they don’t know is that listing the magazines one thinks are great is more revealing than any psychological or personality test. So, all you have to do is read the list if you want to know the collective personalities, political leanings, values and passions of Terry Armour, Tim Bannon, Allison Benedikt, Linda Bergstrom, Joan Cairney, Mike Conklin, Rob Elder, Eric Gwinn, Kelly Haramis, Steve Johnson, Chris Jones, Blair Kamin, Michael Kellams, Julia Keller, Jim Kirk, Karen Klages, Charles Leroux, Lilah Lohr, Jason McKean, Emily Nunn, Patrick T. Reardon, Maureen Ryan, Nara Schoenberg, James Warren.
