Top 5 magazine cover cliches: Peter Carlson notes one of my pet peeves in his Magazine Reader column today: the over-use of lists. The woman service books started it. Men’s Health has perfected it. And as noted recently, Men’s Health influences every title sold on the newsstand. Despite it being a pet peeve, I am still a list practitioner. I’ll confess.

Funerazine: Russ Smith has an idea for a new magazine. It’s a bad idea, but it’s an idea. For the record, I had a long and somewhat serious conversation years ago with someone who had the exact same idea, except in that case it was a 24-hour cable channel.

Blog lite: Remember when you were in school and you took that class trip to the nation’s capitol. Well, despite spending a lot of time in D.C. (including living here three years and working on Capitol Hill), I’m having flash backs to such an experience. Except when you’re a grown up doing this with some heavy-duty political activists, you get to walk behind the ropes and hear from the people you typically only read about. I’m in a blogfree zone for most of the day, however. |
