Where have all the boys gone?

Where have all the boys gone? (From today’s Washington Post): “Colleges and universities across the country are grappling with the case of the mysteriously vanishing male. Where men once dominated, they now make up no more than 43 percent of students at American institutions of higher learning, according to 2003 statistics, and this downward trend shows every sign of continuing unabated.”

Without a doubt, men still dominate business school. Last night I was told by a 2006 MBA candidate that the class of 2007 is “lucky” to be a whopping 27% female. That luck hasn’t stopped classmates from trying creative ways to take classes at the nursing and education schools.

Interesting, Blair. Sounds like that statistic is not limited to Vanderbilt. Compare that to medical schools where, over the past 20 years, women med students have gone from 28.8% of enrollees to 46%.
