Why your life sucks: Shawn Lea has this amusing and enlightening story about someone she sat next to on a flight today: “I was sitting next to an older gentleman who was reading Why Your Life Sucks - extensively marking sections with a green highlighter. (I am not making this up.) The man never made eye contact with me, never smiled, never said hello. I came very close to telling him one reason that his life sucks which that book may not explore is he’s ignoring all those around him, blocking himself off, not connecting at all.”

NBA fines Mark Cuban $100k — for blogging: (From ESPN.com): “Cuban was fined $100,000 for going onto the court and another $100,000 for being critical of the league regarding the selection of playoff officials, and how to improve playoff officiating on blogmaverick.com.”

That does it: Despite my total lack of interest in the NBA, I’ve just become a Dallas Mavericks fan — and, heck, I’ll even go see Akeelah and the Bee.

Steve Rubel: “It’s not the first time.” Steve is referring to a 2004 “incident” that inspired me to name Cuban the rexblog 2004 “blogger of the year.”

Small business weblogs: The Smallbusiness.com directory of weblogs devoted to small business-related topics continues to grow and is now divided into categories. If you’d like to add a blog listing to one of the category directories, please do so (it’s a wiki) or email me and I (or always-vigilant intern Matt) will add it. If someone wants to create an OPML list of small business weblogs, it would be a great place to start. I’ve been experimenting with this page on Smallbusiness.com as a means of displaying an aggregated view of headlines from some of the small business related blogs I monitor.

NetNewsWire 2.1: I have upgraded today, but haven’t kicked the tires yet much on the new version. But what I see, I like. For the record: While in the real world, I live in Nashville, when I’m doing anything online, I live in NetNewsWire.

Update: List of changes, fixes and enhancements.

Amen, Jeff Jarvis: (On why “There is no blogospher. There is only the people in it.”) “We are not a mass, not a monolith, not even a medium. We’re just people talking. You’ll agree with some, disagree with some; like some, hate others. It’s just like life. It’s just people. The sooner you stop treating “the blogosphere” as a medium, the sooner you’ll understand how to interact with it. It’s made of people. Talk with them.”

Mark Cuban is a ‘whiner’: “People who don’t whine are punching bags. They just go about their day, their job, their life knowing there is nothing they can do to change a darn thing, so why say a word?”

I have no idea of the context of Mark Cuban’s salvo this morning, but I love it whenever he gets wound up. Later today, when I have the time, I will add to this post an explanation of why I continue to believe Mark Cuban is a zen master of blogging.

Separated at search? Maybe it’s just me, but that’s a, well, interesting photo selection in the New York Times today of Bill Gates and Eric Schmidt. It’s begging for captions.

Update: Now that I’ve actually found the time to read the article, I highly recommend it as a great example of how business history can be fascinating and instructional. Also, one of my go-to quote-meisters has a great snippet: “History, then, suggests that past success is often an anchor holding a
company back, and that Microsoft is at risk from the Google challenge.
“The wind is really behind Google, and Microsoft’s main tool for
navigating the future is the rear view mirror,” said Paul Saffo, a
director of the Institute for the Future, a forecasting consultancy in
Silicon Valley.”
