[...] I don’t watch TV news for the reason Dave explains — I find I’m rarely in synch with what CNN producers believe is news. My approach to gathering and organizing news online is counter to the experience of watching news on CNN. Indeed, I can hardly watch TV that is not recorded on my DVR. Ever since someone in a comment on this blog told me I could program my Comcast remote so that I could make a button command to “jump ahead 30 seconds,” I have even started recording news so that I can zap stories that are irrelevant to me.
I once had a Time Warner DVR that when you pressed play from fast forwarding, would automatically back up 5 seconds. This worked perfectly to catch the beginning of the show coming back from commercial. It's the biggest thing I miss on my Comcast DVR. But now I'm going to have to figure out how to program my remote to do this 30sec jump. Thanks!

I'm still trying to get my non-comcast DVD player to work after the Comcast tech installed the digital crapnection (not my choice, but am I bitter?). Something there is about disc players that does not like me - I had the one in my Mac laptop replaced after it went haywire and within a few weeks, the replacement crapped out on me too.

Thanks, Rob. I DO have a Comcast DVR rather than a TiVo and you prove once more why I am smarter because I blog -- I didn't know I could do that. This, of course, means there will be another New York Times trend story on the percentage of people who can skip over commercials really just fast forward through them.

Good find, Rex. By the way, if you have a Comcast DVR rather than a TiVo, you can program a button on the remote to jump ahead 30 seconds at a time. We use this feature constantly, and we use the instant replay (jump back 15 seconds) to reorient if the 30 second jumps don't land right on the show's resume point. It's typically pretty close, so the only commercials we wind up seeing are the last 10-15 seconds of the commercial immediately preceding the program's return from the break.

(A Google search for Motorola 6412 30 second skip or something similar should lead you to the instructions. It took me about 5 minutes to walk through the steps, and then I've never looked back.
