It just hit my newsreader from the Nashville blogosphere that a “local-girl-makes-good”. The new Miss USA is Rachel Smith, a Clarksville native and Belmont University graduate and, if her Wikipedia entry is correct, an Oprah Winfrey (another local-connection) intern. Oh, and here’s another Nashville connection: When I clicked over to the Miss USA website to read about her, I noticed that Titans quarterback Vince Young was one of the judges. Hmmm.
(Admission: unless it has to do with beauty queens getting busted for drugs or past moral lapses, I rarely keep up with this news niche. From the published reports, it appears the Miss USA folks are not going to have such problems with this year’s winner.)
While I’m on the subject of Nashvillians and contests, I’ll note that another Belmont University graduate, Melinda Doolittle, is one of the ten finalists on American Idol. Thanks to the wonders of DVR, I watched her sing on last week’s episode and am happy to predict that she’s a lock to win. I’ll warn, however, that I haven’t watched any of the other contestants. I burned out on American Idol after watching part of only one season, the Carrie Underwood year.
Belmont may have been eliminated from both the men’s and women’s NCAA tournament during the first rounds, but they sure are getting some halo publicity from their talented graduates.
