I think we should bail out the ice cart business from the turn of the century.... didn't the refrigerator put them out of business?

I hear quite a few good people lost their jobs and are still getting unemployment

I would not take the money if I were google , but perhaps a RedHat and a few other(s) might make more sense companies with a track record but not the cash.

@Lora - I can't think of a Google-like business in Nashville. Or anywhere in the world, for that matter. @Niall - As you've brought up some of the reasons I have Google, I'll agree. Maybe shifting their business model to being a government contractor will solve that dilemma. (I'll admit, again, I'm improvising here -- I haven't thought through any of this to defend this post. And I'm fully aware of Google's sins and the rat-traps of ideas into which it has thrown down lots of cash.)

Nice post. Got me thinking about shag (small hairy audacious goals). What if Google hadda simply taken the resources it put into Chrome and contirbuted them to Firefox. Or docs and apps and contributed to Open Office.

The efficiencies, the value realised, the benefits for society...all worth sponsorship via taxpayers money

Now what could Google do for automakers? Can we name the top "Google-like" businesses in the Greater Nashville Area? Can we even begin with a list of those who clearly create 1. profit (not just gross revenues) 2. recurring value for their audience/customers 3. innovate ....
Hmmm, no business is perfect & I don't believe government ever will be either, but to filter out the large, flashy, and ineffective perhaps we need some new tools for measuring.
