I think you hit the nail on the head here Rex. Local coverage is what should sustain news organizations. The more they lean toward national and international news the less I need to pay attention to them. That information can be had for a million different sources - and I can tap each on of those sources without being locked in to one source for all my information.

Newspaper companies have operated under the assumption that the newspaper would always be the preferred method of delivery for news. Lately, many act as if they are entitled to be in business, whether their model works, or not.

How could such a large group of allegedly intelligent people sit by and watch the evolution of the Internet, blogging, podcasting, mobile devices, etc. and continue to think that their businesses could continue on as usual? And now it's the readers fault for not joining them in their mid-20th century delusion?

There is still a place in our culture for newspapers, but you are right when you say it's the locals that have the advantage. I can go anywhere to read about the war in Iraq or the Economic Stimulus package. It's the source that can tell me about the bank robbery down the street yesterday that has the exclusive.

Rex,

The answer is a new business model, driven by readers rather than publishers. We have it at ProjectVRM. My post on the matter: PayChoice: a new business model for newspapers.
