I think you've captured the frustration of most small business owners who have started commons at great personal risk, made them successful and are now being hammered by federal lawmakers and policy makers who are more concerned with their personal brand and playing to the media than in really accomplishing anything. I started my business 14 years ago, out of my own pocket and today employ 57 full time professionals. I resent the fact that every government bailout is focused on either big companies or the lower to middle class and that I'm being told I don't do enough and have to give more to the government. The reward for taking risk and being successful is becoming less and less attractive everyday.

Your thoughts about safe and prudent investment reminded me that lots of those survivors never again put a dime in anything more risky than a CD. And they kind of worried about CDs.

Very nicely covered. I've had the same hope that a blocked Congress was a more efficient one since it reduced the harm they could do, but you effectively point out the downfall. If the colon of government is plugged, s*$t does pile up.

Too big to fail should b e a synonym for too big to exist.

Excellent analysis. I'm with you. I've also lived through big company and small. And a stint in local government. A few years ago I went from big Reed Business Information to small Summit Publishing. Small is where innovation often happens--if not always financial success due to market turbulence. You are so right about CEOs of large companies who don't know what the corporation is doing and then pleading ignorance when it all hits the fan. And, yes, the founders of the republic foresaw that Congress could become just a battleground of special interests. I don't think anyone foresaw the coming of the perpetual candidate, though. Don't think there's much in the short term to turn that around.

In my little niche of the market--industrial automation--many pundits keep calling for huge consolidation thinking that only big is good. The CEOs (so they tell me) don't go along with that analysis. They are innovating by acquiring the little companies where innovation starts.

By the way, Oxley was my Congressman (never voted for him). Then Boehner--who went from calling Congress a bastion of corruption to a fine group of people (guess when he got a leadership position). Just got moved to another district. Hope you never have reason to hear of him.

Anyway, we all keep on keeping on. I just try to encourage everyone.

@Joe - Yes you are correct. I have never seen more business opportunity than right now. I don't write about it because no one believes me when I do -- and frankly, I don't wan't to encourage the competition. ; )

Thanks for this Rex. Moving from serving bigger businesses/brands to creating a small business certainly changes your perspective on life in general (at least in my situation).

I agree with your post on most everything, but (and I believe we share this), I've never seen more opportunity that right now, and have never seen the ability of individuals to make remarkable things happen, merely by just doing good works. I guess that's why I love social media so much. The more "good" you do in the form of content and assistance, the better it helps your business.

This is so hard for "big" businesses to get their head around, which is probably another reason what you state above is true.

Keep the Faith!
