The New York Times, Kindle announcement sounds like deja vu all over again

A brief history (in links) of announcements of New York Times digital version (of print edition) subscription deals:

February 20, 2001.

September 15, 2006

Today

Quote from today’s announcement (NYTimes live blog – linked above):

“10:58 a.m.: “We’ve known for more than a decade that one day an e-reader product would offer the same satisfying experience as the reading of a printed newspaper,” Mr. Sulzberger said. He called the partnership with Amazon an experiment and a laboratory to test new digital distribution strategies. Mr. Sulzberger did not give details on the size of the discount the papers will offer.

Translation: “If at first you don’t succeed, try try again.”

  • Even those who are in college today are likely to depend on the written word. Scanning a newspaper takes hardly 10 seconds. Maybe a newspaper sized foldable Kindle should be invented.
