However I am familiar with HIPAA, which is why I was not asking the hospital to tell me _if_ Mr. Jobs was a patient, I was asking _what_ they were saying, at that time, on Jobs.

In fact, the ethical rules that do apply are simple, and you can rules can check with any professional public relations organization: don’t lie. If you can’t comment, don’t comment.

The head of communications for a major medical center, one with years of experience, should know that.

Instead I was told Mr. Jobs was never a patient, which is incorrect.
