Growing up in south Alabama in the 1960s, I have the dubious distinction of being able to recall watching George Wallace deliver a campaign stump speech. I know my parents didn’t take me as they were staunchly apolitical so I probably rode my bicycle to the rally and attended alone. I wasn’t a Wallace fan but I was a political junky even then. I can only recall one line he gave the entire talk: “Nevada has the lowest crime rate in the nation,” he bellowed, ” That’s because they’ve made all the crimes legal.” It brought down the house (however, it was an outdoor event). Though just a kid, I thought it was a great one-liner.
I just had a flashback to that speech when I read that Nevada is trying to use the same tactic once more to lower its crime rate, this time by legalizing marijuana.
