More magazine trenspotting

More magazine trendspotting: Last week, I mentioned that my pet peeve, faux trends, has a name, trendspotting. A recent Newsweek has a great (awful) example of a trendspotting story: teenage “mall prostitutes” who turn tricks for designer clothes. The headline: “This could be your kid.” As Slate’s Jack Shafer displays, chances are, it’s not your kid…and it’s not a trend. The article also has a good link to a GQ piece from 1998 by Daniel Radosh on the topic of trendspotting.
