The Harping strategy

harpersThe Harping strategy: DM News’ Mickey Alam Khan writes that Harper’s Magazine’s resurgence is due, in part, to its political leanings.

“Because of the anti-Bush sentiment, that’s helping us,” (John R. MacArthur, president and publisher) said. “It’s becoming more and more of a political magazine that does literature as opposed to a literary magazine that does politics, which is what traditionally the magazine’s been.”

Is there a resurgence of anti-Bush sentiment someone hasn’t told me about? I thought those who hate him have been pretty firmly entrenched in that camp from Day One. Did they go away and now are resurging, or something?

The article goes on to explain that the magazine’s most successful circulation marketing is done with a 10-year-old “control letter.” Perhaps back then, the magazine was catching the early anti-Bush seniments back when he was running for governor of Texas.

The magazine also recently launched a blog-like website that has the most curious approach to links I’ve ever seen: About every third word is a link to another place on the site where the same word appears.
